South Devon Athletic Club also presented George and Sarah Osborne, from The Williams Foundation, with a cheque for £1404.20 after fundraising for the foundation as their chosen charity in 2015. Williams Syndrome is a rare congenital disorder that occurs randomly affecting around one in 18,000 people in the UK. The foundationactively supports research into the educational, behavioural, social, scientific and medical aspects of the Syndrome.

South Devon Athletic Club raised the money in a variety of ways. They held quiz nights, raffles and cake stalls. To accompany this various members have raised money via sponsorship for running from 10K up to full Marathons. During the Coleton Footachre, the race the club organises at Coleton Fishacre in June, more money was raised with lots more baking.

SDAC's Michelle Cowley represents Devon!

SDAC's own Michelle Cowley has represented Devon in the England Athletics South West Inter-Counties Road Race Championship.

Devon’s Men’s and Women’s teams were both victorious in the inter-counties championship match at the Frome 10k on Sunday 17th July, beating Wiltshire and an under-strength Avon contingent into second and third places respectively.

Overall winner Tom Merson led in the Devon Men’s team, followed by Ronnie Richmond, Sam Hopton, Jason Drew and Andy Ingle. First lady home was Wiltshire runner Ruth Barnes – but Devon’s Women’s team of Serane Stone, Ali Thorn, Cleo Perry, Michelle Cowley, Ellie Dominey and Alex Cutts outscored their opponents to take the team prize. It was quite a day for leading Devon runner Serane, who was also celebrating her 40th birthday.

This is the first year of running the England Athletics South West Inter-Counties Road Race Championship. There are three events in the 2016 Championship; the Wiltshire 10 miler (February), Frome 10k (July) and The Sturminster Newton Half Marathon (August).

After two events, Wiltshire leads both the Men’s and Women’s championship tables, with Avon in second place, Devon third, Somerset fourth and Gloucestershire fifth.

England Athletics South West Road Running Co-ordinator Tony Gale says, “It’s good to see county Athletic Associations rising to the challenge and putting some strong teams into these events. Five of the seven South West counties have points on the board after two events – and we’re hoping to improve on that in 2017.”

Sam Stacey Leaving Do
Sam Stacey joined our club as an 11 year old junior, and was coached by Mark Holman in his early days, before progressing to becoming a coach of the juniors himself which he has done very successfully. Now he is going back to college and handing over the reigns to Vince Langdon, Sue Hayes, Karen Bumby and the ever faithful Adrian Tucker. Good luck for your future from all at SDAC especially the young athletes you have trained. You are welcome back anytime and will be surely missed.

Festive to 5k
Festive to 5k

Five members from South Devon AC recently completed an England Athletics "Leadership in Running Fitness" course, they then decided to instigate a "Festive to 5K course" for beginners to running. On the first Thursday in January, 29 people joined up for this 6 week course and on February 18th, 14 of these gallant runners completed their first ever distance of 5k. Having been issued with race numbers and completed their warm up routine they were off around Paignton green together with some of their coaches, cheered along the way by other club members. Everyone completed this run and is now looking forward to joining the other club members on their usual Tuesday and Thursday evening classes.
Those who completed the 5k (in no particular order) were Rachel Lamble, Jess Osborne, Linda Edmonds, Avisha Ramalou, Louise Rumbalow, Jane Stead, Sara Greenway, Vashti Wickers, Nina Hardy, Nigel Scarrott, Maddison Berry, Karen Berry, Katy Twelves, Hanna Worthington. All other new runners who were not able to complete the 5K because of injury or illness will have the opportunity to do so in the future.
Thank you all for making the night successful and your certificates will be given out on our awards night on 5th March at the Brixham Cricket Club. All are welcome.
